NERIP's website has been in existence for four years now and we feel that this is time to give it a facelift. This month we are consulting with people who currently use the site, and those who don't, about the kinds of services we should be providing. Whether you are familiar with the current site or not, we'd like to know what your needs are from NERIP. If you would like to take part in a focus group discussion in your part of the region to consider the next developments for NERIP's window on the world, please let us know by e-mailing this link. We are also running an online survey for people to give their thoughts. You can take part in the survey here

We are often asked if there is a library of research reports about the region, especially research related to the development of strategy. NERIP's on-line search engine, QandQ, provides instant results to a keyword search of all material published on the internet by eighteen academic research centres with the North East's Universities. It's a more comprehensive resource than any traditional library could be!

Equality and Diversity in the North East - a Statistical Profile

This report from Amy O'Donnell at Northumbria University give a very comprehensive profile of the numbers of people in different groups of the population in the region, and the issues faced by each. This is the first in a suite of reports to be produced for the North East Equality and Diversity Board to help inform and influence forthcoming regional strategies. The slides from the launch event for this report, including presentations from Amy and from David Darton, Director of Foresight at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, can be found here.

National Employer Skills Survey (NESS)

The National Employers Skills Survey 2007 (NESS07) was commissioned by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Sector Skills Development Agency (SSDA) to provide comprehensive, definitive and up-to-date information on the recruitment, skills and workforce development issues and challenges facing employers in England. Nationally over 79,000 establishments provided information on their recruitment, skill needs and training behaviour. Within the North East, a total of 5,608 interviews were conducted.

NESS07 is the fourth in the NESS series (it was previously conducted in 2003, 2004 and 2005), and throughout this report the 2007 results are compared with these earlier studies, particularly with the 2005 findings, in order to assess how employers' skills needs and challenges are changing over time.

Carbon Trajectories

As part of a piece of work on "Carbon Trajectories" undertaken for the Regional Assembly, AEA Technology have produced a spreadsheet model containing projections and estimates of the region's greenhouse gas emissions. The spreadsheet contains emissions data for the years 1990 (the baseline year for the Kyoto protocol), 2005, 2020 and 2050 and covers the full basket of greenhouse gases not just carbon dioxide. Emissions data are provided for 20 different sources and local authority estimates are available from the model. For more details and access to the model contact david.mell@nerip.com .
